Arrival Of Islam To Malay Peninsular

Fundamental Differences Between Ahlus Sunnah And Sufism

1. Some confusions and dangers between the two, highlighted:-

Ahli As-Sunnah Wal Jamaah Sufism
1.Source of Teaching
The Quraan and the Traditions of the Prophet (SAW), and understanding them as they were understood by salafus soleh Sources:-
a) Islam
b) Christian
c) Buddhist
d) Hindu
e) Syiah/Persian
2.Methodology of Understanding the Quraan and Prophetic Traditions
Understanding the teachings according to the interpretations of the sahabah, and in the original Arabic language
(seeking in Hadeeth knowledge is a must and an honour)
a. Understanding via experience and instinct

b. Destroying the links of hadis. Confirming weak, bad and false hadis by means of "intuition"
Abu Yazid al-Bustami said: "You acquire knowledge from corpse to corpse, but we acquire knowledge from one that never dies"

c. Learning of the hadis is degrading. Al-Junaid says: "Free yourselves from three things:-
1. Searching for life.
2. Learning the Hadith.
3. Marriage.
3. Faith and Laws.
Islam is faith and laws. They are standard, applicable to all and sundry. There is no specific teaching for specific groups. Islam is laws and reality. The former is tangible whilst the latter abstract (spiritual). Every decree is viewed from these two angles.
4.Source of Knowledge.
The Quraan and the Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) (sunnahs) are the ultimate source. Sufis hold tight to ladunni, regarded as coming direct from Allah through kasyaf.
(The teory of Ladunni Knowledge was being populared by Hisyam Ibnu Al-Hakam [died:199H] , a follower of syiah sect who is well verse in 'ilmu kalam'. Originated from Kufah).
5.Highest Station
The highest station achieveable and sought for is al-ihsan. This is reached through total submission to Allah. Al-Hulul and al-Ittihad. Where once attained one becomes synonimous with Allah. He is Allah and Allah is he. Having reached this station, the sufi is free from all the syriats that was earlier encumbant upon him. This is outright syirk. Amongst the advocaters of this belief are al-Hallaj, Ibnu al-Faradh and Ibnu Sab'in.

*Untill they have reach this station, they will then be independent from the syariat.

**Al-Hallaj, Ibnu Al-Faradh and Ibnu Sab'ín were among the champion of these practices.
6. Allah's Location
Allah sits on His Arasy as He Himself stated in 7 different Ayats in the Quraan, and in many confirmed hadis. An Ahli as Sunnah does not question "how" Allah sits. Consequent to al-Hulul and al-Ittihad, the sufi is inclined towards wahdatul wujud, i.e. Allah is everywhere.
Baharuddin al-Baithar says: "Dogs and hogs are but our ilah, and that priests in the churches are but Allah."
